How to Measure Motorcycle Handlebars: The 7 Numbers That Guarantee Fitment on Your Harley
Ask any rider who's bolted on the wrong set of bars: the mistake never happens during installation. It happens at the moment of ordering, when "those look about right" stands in for actual numbers. Handlebars are sized by seven measurements, and once you know yours, fitment stops being a gamble.

The 7 Handlebar Measurements (and How to Take Each One)
1.Bar Diameter
Measured at the riser clamping area. 1" is the Harley standard — nearly every modern H-D runs 1" risers and 1" controls. Fat bars (1-1/4" and up) get their look from a thicker center section; on quality bars the control and grip areas stay 1" so your stock Harley controls, throttle, heated grips, and grips still fit.
How to measure: Caliper across the tubing, or measure straight across the open end of the bar.
2.Overall Width
Grip tip to grip tip at the widest point. Rule of thumb: bar width close to your shoulder width keeps your wrists neutral and arms relaxed. Baggers run wide (33"–39"); narrow chopper bars run tight for splitting lanes.
How to measure: Tape measure, end to end, straight across.
3.Rise — The One Everyone Measures Wrong
When someone says they run "14s," they mean rise: the height from the bottom of the bar to the top of the end rise. Two mistakes ruin this measurement constantly:
Mistake #1: Measuring with the bar lying flat on the ground. You'll get a false number every time. Stand the bar vertically against a wall, positioned the way it mounts on the bike, and measure straight up to the center of the grip-end tubing.
Mistake #2: Comparing U-bar rise to T-bar rise directly. T-bars mount differently and sit effectively lower for the same listed rise — if you're switching from a U-shaped bar on risers to a T-bar, go about 2" taller to keep your hands at the same height.
4.Pullback
How far the grips sweep back toward you — from the front plane of the bar straight back to the grip tip, with the bar held at its mounted angle. More pullback sits you more upright. Shorter riders and riders with shorter arms almost always benefit from more of it; reaching for bars that are too far away is how shoulders end up sore 50 miles in.
How to measure: Bar against a wall at mounting angle; measure from the wall to the grip end.
5.Center Width
The width across the bottom of the bar before the bends start. This is the measurement that bites batwing-fairing Touring riders (Street Glide, Electra Glide, Ultra) — the fairing only has room for so much bar. If your bike wears a fairing, shop bagger-specific bars engineered around it, like our Twin Peaks line, rather than hoping a universal bar clears.
6.Riser Spacing
Center-to-center distance between your risers. 3-1/2" centers are the Harley standard; springer front ends run wider and need bars made for it.
7.Clamping Area Diameter
Measure the tube exactly where the risers grab it — it's not always the same as the bar's headline diameter. Standard LA Choppers bars clamp at 1" for stock-style risers; our Hefty series carries the full 1-1/4" through the clamp for strength and seamless fat-bar lines, paired with matching risers.
One More Check Before You Order: Your Throttle
Look at the throttle side of your current bars. Two cables coming out of the housing = cable throttle. No cables = throttle-by-wire (TBW). TBW bikes — most Touring models 2008-up and M8-era Softails — require bars with machined notches that index the electronic throttle sleeve. A non-notched bar simply won't accept the assembly. Most LA Choppers bars come TBW-notched and drilled for internal wiring; cable-throttle applications use dimpled-and-drilled versions.

- Throttle type checked: TBW-notched vs. dimpled/drilled cable
- Fairing bike? Bagger-specific bars for guaranteed clearance
- Rise measured vertically — and +2" if going U-bar to T-bar
- Cable plan for anything more than ~2" over stock
- Width roughly matching your shoulders or your build's intent
